Precision Mass Measurements with the
Canadian Penning Trap

Canadian Penning Trap Mass Spectrometer

Schematic

The Canadian Penning Trap Mass Spectrometer (CPTMS) is currently situated at Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois, USA. This system was originally conceived for the precision mass measurement of "exotic" (radioactive) nuclei with half-lives greater than 50ms to a precision of 1 part per billion (ppb) of the mass.

The scientific effort is derived from a collaboration of scientists across Canada and the United States. This team consists of :

  • Argonne National Laboratory,Illinois,USA,
  • McGill University, Montreal, Canada
  • University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada
  • Texas A&M University, Texas, USA

The spectrometer is coupled to the ATLAS (Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerating System) ion accelerator via a dedicated beamline. There are also provisions for stable ion mass measurement through laser desorption of solid target samples. The features of the spectrometer consists of an ion source (direct/remote), a cooling/buncher trap and the precision mass measurement Penning Trap that is situated in the magnetic field of a 5.9Tesla superconducting magnet.
The direct ion source is a laser desorption system for solid target samples. The "remote" ion source is an elaborate "gas-filled" energetic ion stopper. This system is used to stop energetic recoils produced during online fusion-evaporation reactions. An RFQ Ion Guide then tranports the "stopped" ions from the Gas Cell to the CPTMS for precision mass measurements.

An overview of the CPTMS project is presented here including instrument developments (electronics) as a portion of thesis work ( TOF selector, HV Waveform Amplifier, Solid State Switching Systems, Pulsed Operation of RFQ Trap )
